Father God, Give Us a Revelation of Who Jesus Is.
Luke 5:1-8 NKJV
So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
As I learned to do through practice once a week in my previous Bible study, I will make my observations of this scripture. It is very clear who God is in this scripture and who man is. God is Holy. Man is sinful.
1. Simon called Jesus Master so he had already been called by Him, but he was still fishing.
2. Simon's most valued earthly possession was shared with Jesus.
3. Simon was worn out from fishing all night, but he obeyed Jesus' command.
4. Simon was overwhelmed at this miracle catch, and knew Jesus was the Son of God.
5. Upon his recognition of who Jesus was, he FELL down at Jesus' feet. Notice he did not just bow.
6. Simon had a revelation that he was a sinful man when he came face to face with the revelation of most Holy God.
7. There was a progression of events which led Simon to the revelation of who Jesus is. Simon gave Jesus his most valued possession. Simon obeyed even though he was worn out from toiling all night. Simon obeyed Jesus' command even though he thought it was useless. God honored Simon's obedience. Through each step of obedience Simon came closer to the revelation of the Holiness of Jesus.
Application for us today: Are we willing to begin the chain of obedience? Will we give Jesus what is most valuable to us, time from entertainment for example? Will we obey when we are worn out? Will we reach the final reward of knowing the Holiness of our Lord Jesus?
Father God,
Today there are many who are far from this revelation of Your holiness. You are waiting for us all to come each day out of the world's view of Jesus into Your Holy of Holies where we fall down before You, the one who is worthy to receive blessing, and honor, glory and power. In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
